The Spirit of Understanding: Knowing the Heart of God

“The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him, The Spirit of wisdom and understanding…” — Isaiah 11:2b, 1 John 5:20, Ephesians 1:18, 1 Corinthians 2:12

Not everything in the kingdom of God can be explained in simple definitions. Some things can only be truly understood once they're felt. The Spirit of Understanding is the one who opens the eyes of our hearts so we can grasp not just what God says, but why He says it. He helps us move from knowing information about God to understanding the heart of God.

One of the most misunderstood truths in the Bible is grace. Some reject this teaching, fearing people might abuse God’s goodness. But Jesus didn't avoid it. Jesus never gave His disciples a formal definition of grace, but He demonstrated it. He knelt to wash their feet. He forgave the ones who failed Him. He welcomed the broken, dined with sinners, and showed mercy to the undeserving. He let them experience grace, not just hear about it.

The same is true for us today. With the Spirit of Understanding, we don’t just read Scripture line by line, but we begin to read beyond the lines. We start seeing the Father’s heart behind the words: His love, His patience, and His purpose throughout the Bible. Without the Spirit, we might use the Bible to argue or to judge others. But with Him, the Word becomes personal, alive, and deeply transformative.

That’s why grace can’t be grasped with logic alone. Without the Spirit’s help, we’re likely to misunderstand it, just like the man who asked Paul, “Shall we continue in sin so that grace may abound?” (Romans 6:1). But the one who has truly experienced grace knows the simple answer to that question: Certainly not.

And this is why Proverbs reminds us, “Lean not on your own understanding” (Proverbs 3:5). Human wisdom can only go so far, and without the Spirit, we may twist even the most beautiful truths. But the Spirit of Understanding doesn’t just inform us—He transforms us. He helps us discern what’s true, even when it doesn’t make sense on the surface. He gives us peace, not necessarily because we already understand the purpose behind our struggles, but because we know the heart of the Father, and we trust that He is working all things together for our good (Romans 8:28).

Father, thank You for the Spirit of Understanding. Open the eyes of our hearts so we can truly know You—not just in mind, but in spirit and truth. Help us to see beyond definitions and into Your heart. Teach us to trust You, even when we don’t fully understand. Amen.
